Headquartered in Munich, Germany, the BMW Group is a multinational manufacturer of automobiles and motorcycles. The company started manufacturing aircraft engines for the German military in 1916. Their very first aircraft engine utilized the same straight-six configuration that BMW vehicles are famous for today.

BMW underwent several reorganizations after WW2 and manufactured everything from motorcycle engines to pots and pans. In 1962, they introduced the New Class compact sedans which are the first examples of automobiles built in the style of today’s BMW. From 1972 to 1978 BMW introduced the 5 series, 3 series, 6 series, and 7 series, expanding their offerings into larger luxury sedans. Released in 1984 and 1986 respectively, the M5 and M3 cemented BMW as a serious contender in the world of performance vehicles.
